Neville Goddard and The Law of Assumption
Neville Goddard was a renowned spiritual teacher and author. He taught that our mind is the creative force behind everything that happens in our lives.
One of his most controversial teachings is that “you don’t have to lift a finger” to manifest your desires.
Goddard said that whatever we imagine and feel as true, we manifest in our reality. We do not have to do anything physically to make it so. All we have to do is assume the feeling of the wish fulfilled, and let go of the how. That principle is called the law of assumption.
What does this mean?
It means that we can create anything we want by simply assuming it and feeling it as if it were already done. We do not have to worry about the details, the obstacles, the timing, or the means. We just have to trust that our mind will find a way to make it happen.
Sounds too good to be true, right?
Well, it is not. It is a universal law that works for everyone, whether they are aware of it or not. Goddard proved it many times in his own life and in the lives of his students. He shared many success stories of how he and others used this simple technique.
One of his famous stories is about his trip to Barbados. I’ll share a short version of it.
Goddard’s Trip to Barbados
In one of his lectures, Goddard describes a story of how he manifested a trip to Barbados with the help of his friend and mentor, Abdullah.
Back in the day, Goddard was still a starving artist in New York (a dancer, to be precise). He wanted to visit his family in Barbados, but he had no money for the trip. So, he asked Abdullah for advice.
Abdullah told him: “You are in Barbados.” He instructed him to visualize that he was already in Barbados every night before he slept, seeing America from Barbados and smelling the tropical blossoms in the air.
So, Goddard did as instructed. He imagined that he was already in Barbados every night before he slept, and assumed he was in his mother’s home. He was living in the end.
Within a few weeks, he received an unexpected letter from his brother offering him a ticket and some money to come to Barbados. You can guess the rest of the story.
This is just one of the many examples of how Goddard used this principle. We can do the same for anything we want, whether it is health, wealth, love, happiness, or anything else. Nothing is impossible if we truly believe it.
What Does “You Don’t Have to Lift a Finger to Make It Come To Pass” Mean?
The idea behind this quote is that we don’t need to struggle or work hard to manifest our desires. Instead, we can change our beliefs and let the mind do the rest.
So, once we change our inner world, our outer world must reflect that change.
As Goddard said, our physical world is only a projection of our inner world.
In other words, we project our consciousness onto the screen of time and space.
Our assumptions create our world, and we can manifest easily by changing them.
This idea can be confusing for many people new to manifesting. We’ve been conditioned to believe that hard work and hustle are necessary to accomplish success.
But Goddard’s teaching reminds us that changing our assumptions is the key to manifesting. Once we do that, we will naturally be compelled to take inspired action that aligns with our desires.
When we visualize and feel as if our desires have already been fulfilled, we literally create a new reality that aligns with our deepest desires.
This doesn’t mean we won’t take any physical steps; rather, we’ll be compelled to take inspired steps that align with our new thoughts.
Common Manifestation Misconceptions
One of the most common misconceptions is that getting what we want requires hard work. We’ve been taught that we need to hustle and grind to achieve our goals. But this mentality can actually hinder our manifestation efforts.
By pushing and forcing, we only create more resistance and block our desire from coming to fruition.
When we focus on the effort rather than the outcome, we can get stuck in a cycle of striving and never truly manifest what we want. At least not those things we consciously want.
The concept of not raising a finger dispels this misconception. It reminds us that manifestation is about changing our internal state. It’s not about working hard; it’s about working smart.
When we change our subconscious beliefs and feelings, we’ll naturally be inspired to take steps that align with our desires. This action won’t feel like work. It will feel effortless and aligned with our purpose.
Effortless Action in Taoism
The concept of “not raising a finger” in Neville Goddard’s teachings also has a connection with the Taoist principle of Wu-Wei, or effortless action. Wu-Wei is the art of doing by not-doing. It’s about flowing with life’s natural rhythms rather than fighting against them.
Wu-Wei reminds us that we don’t need to force things to happen. Instead, we can trust that our desires will come in the right way and at the right time.
If we release the need to control every aspect of our manifestation journey, we can tap into the power of the universe and allow our desires to come to us easily and effortlessly.
We are one with all creation, and all creation is one with us.
But we have forgotten this truth. We have fallen asleep to our true identity. In a way, we have hidden ourselves from ourselves. Therefore, we have become unconscious of our own power.
So, we have created a world of appearances that seems to be separate from us. A world of effects that seems to be independent of us.
But this world is not real. This world is a mirror that reflects our own consciousness. It’s a shadow that follows our own imagination.
Whatever we accept as real in our consciousness, we create as real in our world.
Whatever we feel as natural in our Self, we attract as natural in our life. So, there are no causes outside of our consciousness that affect our life.
We can wake up to our true identity and reclaim our power as creators.
This is the promise of God to us.
God is not a person or a thing, but the spirit of life within us. It is our own imagination.
Assume Your Desire Is Already Yours and Persist in Your Assumption
The reason why many people fail to manifest using these principles is that they lack the conviction and persistence necessary. This is a skill that you need to develop and master. This is what we call “living in the end.”
You must assume that what you want is already yours and stick to it, regardless of what your 3d world is showing.
You need to feel as if it is already real. This is different from simply hoping or wishing for something to happen. You need to embody the feeling of having already reached your goal. It’s about feeling the emotions that come with having what you want.
So, this means that you cannot let doubt and fear creep in. You must remain steadfast in your belief that what you want is already yours.
This can be challenging at times, especially if you’re not seeing any physical evidence of your wish materializing. But remember, your mind is powerful, and it’s working behind the scenes to make your wish come true.
Visualization Technique
How can we apply this concept in our own lives? Here are 5 steps to follow:
- Decide what you want to manifest. Be clear and specific about what you want. What would be an ideal solution or outcome? Write it down.
- Visualize yourself having it now. Use your senses and emotions to create a vivid scene in your mind that implies your wish is fulfilled. For example, if you want a new car, picture yourself driving it and feeling happy. If you want a new relationship, visualize yourself cuddling with your partner and feeling loved.
- Feel the reality of your imagination. Feel as if you already have what you want. Feel the joy, gratitude, satisfaction, confidence, or any other positive emotion that comes with your desire.
- Repeat this process as often as you can. The more you visualize and feel your wish fulfilled, the more you impress it on your subconscious mind, which is the creative power within you. So, repeat your imaginal act regularly.
- Trust and let go. Don’t worry about how or when your desire will come. Do not doubt or question your imagination. Do not interfere with the process by trying to force or manipulate things. Just trust that your mind knows what to do and will bring it to pass in the best possible way.
That’s it. That’s how you manifest anything you want with your mind.
Of course, this does not mean that you should be lazy or passive in life. You should still take physical steps when inspired or guided by your intuition.
But also remember that your mind is the ultimate cause of everything that happens in your life.
You are the creator of your own experience regardless if you’re conscious of it or not.
Now You Know How to Manifest (Literally Without Effort)
I know that this whole concept of “you don’t have to lift a finger” sounds amazing, but:
Oftentimes, people who discover these teachings don’t really put them into practice. I want to make sure this doesn’t happen to you.
If you really want to create your dream life, you must practice these teachings diligently.
To master this skill, you must first become aware of the limits your current state of consciousness imposes upon you. Then, you need to break free from these invisible chains in order to fully unfold your potential.
The easiest way to do this is by making a deliberate manifesting your habitual way of life. Your life circumstances will automatically change as a byproduct of your internal change.
With practice, you will be able to command your desires to transform into facts.
So, practice, practice, practice. Develop the habit of commanding your mind.
